You Know Your Child is Gifted When...

One of the most common question I get as the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) coordinator is, "So, what does it mean to be 'gifted' anyway?"

Sternberg and Zhang (1995) and Perleth et al (2006) suggest the following characteristics are common among young gifted children:

  • use and understand elaborate language
  • draw recognizable pictures
  • development of early writing skills
  • reading fluently by age four
  • independence in learning new things
  • numeracy (understanding number relationships)
  • a sense of task completion

A more elaborate list of general characteristics can be found below.

In addition, please note that gifted students from culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse backgrounds may need to be considered against a broader range of identifiers. Qualitative characteristics are always considered with great interest in the pursuit of placing these students into the GATE program.
