Winslow Unified School District
Gifted and Talented Education
PO Box 580
Winslow, AZ 86047

The state of Arizona defines a gifted student as a child who is of lawful school age, who due to superior intellect or advanced learning ability, or both, is not afforded an opportunity for otherwise attainable progress and development in regular classroom instruction and who needs appropriate gifted education services, to achieve at levels commensurate with the child's intellect and ability.

Students served by the Winslow Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program must demonstrate a 97th percentile score in at least one domain (verbal, quantitative, and/or nonverbal) of a state-approved test of reasoning ability which is administered by a local educational agency (LEA) or other qualified professional. Others with lower scores may also be served.

In Winslow, the test administered by the District for placement in the GATE program is the Cognitive Abilities Test, 7th Ed. (CogAT 7). The test is given three times per academic year. Please see the testing calendar linked below. In addition, all 2nd graders are screened for the GATE program using the Cognitive Abilities Test Screener, 7th Ed. (CogAT Screener). Students whose scores show promise as a result of the screener are recommended for further testing.

Recommendations for testing can come from parents/guardians, teachers, staff members, the students themselves, or from prior placement in another district. If you would like to have your child tested for GATE, please fill out the form below and return it to your child's school.
